Effective January 1, 2026, Iceland has transitioned to a "pay-as-you-use" road tax model. This government regulation shifts infrastructure funding from fuel duties to actual distance driven, ensuring a fairer system for all vehicle types.
The Benefits:
30% Lower Fuel Prices: Refueling at the pump is now significantly cheaper as specific government excise duties have been removed.
Petrol: Approx. ISK 94 ($0.75) lower per liter.
Diesel: Approx. ISK 87 ($0.69) lower per liter.
The Kilometer Fee:
Rate: All rental vehicles under 3.5 tons are subject to a mandatory fee of ISK 6.95 per km (approx. €0.05 / $0.06). This covers government taxes, but some vendors might charge small administration fees.
Applicability: This applies to all vehicles, including Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, and Electric (EV).
Payment: Your service provider will handle the administration for you. We will record your odometer reading at the start and end of your trip; the final total will be calculated and automatically charged to your credit card upon the end of the rental period.
