New 2026 Road Tax & Reduced Fuel Prices

Effective January 1, 2026, Iceland has transitioned to a "pay-as-you-use" road tax model. This government regulation shifts infrastructure funding from fuel duties to actual distance driven, ensuring a fairer system for all vehicle types.

The Benefits:

30% Lower Fuel Prices: Refueling at the pump is now significantly cheaper as specific government excise duties have been removed.

Petrol: Approx. ISK 94 ($0.75) lower per liter.

Diesel: Approx. ISK 87 ($0.69) lower per liter.

The Kilometer Fee:

For this booking, a daily charge of 1.390 ISK will be added to the rental settlement.
